Attack on Medical Personnel
At approximately 2 am on 31.12.08 Dr. Ahab al Madhun, age 35, and Mr. Muhamad Abu Khasideh, a paramedic, age 20, were killed in an IDF bombing while attempting to evacuate injured persons around the area of Tel a-Ris, east of Gaza City. The ambulance called to the scene was also hit and damaged in the attack. Mr. Abu Hatzidah was killed on the scene. Dr. Almadhun died several hours later at Kamal Adwan Hospital.
PHR-Israel has also been monitoring the Israeli media regarding reports by the Head of the General Security Services (GSS; Shabac) that Hamas military operatives are utilizing medical equipment from Shifaa Hospital for use in attacks. In a phone conversation with PHR-Israel staff, hospital administrators staunchly denied these allegations.
PHR-Israel is concerned over the continued shelling of residential areas around Gaza, exposing the civilian population and infrastructure- civilians and doctors as one in the same, to attacks.
Physicians for Human Rights- Israel firmly condemn all attacks on medical infrastructure and personnel, who benefit from neutrality and special protection in light of their medical duties. Physicians for Human Rights-Israel emphasizes that the use of medical infrastructure for the purposes of combat is strictly prohibited and warrants direct condemnation. Even in times of combat, all sides must avoid targeting medical infrastructure and personnel. The intentional attack on medical personnel and equipment is a violation of international law and it is incumbent upon the Israeli Medical and Security establishment to protect and ensure their safety.
We call on you to act immediately to stop attacks on medical personnel and equipment and open a concerted investigation into the 5 events mentioned above.

IOF Offensive on the Gaza Strip Continues for the 8th Consecutive Day; The Number of Palestinians Killed Rises to 372, Mostly Civilians, Including 75 Children and 16 Women, and the Number of House Bombarded Mounts to 73
IOF have continued their offensive on the Gaza Strip for the 8th consecutive day, causing more deaths and casualties among Palestinian civilians, especially children. IOF warplanes have launched more strikes against several civilian facilities in the context of the most aggressive war against the Gaza Strip since it was occupied in 1967. Facts on the ground indicate that all population of the Gaza Strip are targeted and there is a clear intention to destroy all aspects of life and means of subsistence through the use of the most destructive arsenal and the psychological war through leaflets dropped from the air demanding Palestinian civilians to leave their areas of residence. PCHR has closely followed up the developments of the IOF offensive on the Gaza Strip. Development in the past 24 hours have been:
Northern Gaza Strip
· At approximately 14:00 on Friday, 2 January 2009, medical sources in an Egyptian hospital declared that Bilal Suhail Ghabayen, 19, died from a wound he had sustained on 29 December 2008, when IOF warplanes attacked a crowd of Palestinian civilians near a workshop belonging to the Ghabayen family. Two civilians were killed in the attack while they were trying to vacate the workshop.
· At approximately 19:25 on the same day, an IOF warplane fired a missile at Sami Ibrahim Lubbad, a member of the Palestinian resistance, near Sheikh Zayed housing project in Beit Lahia town. He was instantly killed and a civilian bystander was wounded.
· At approximately 03:45 on Saturday, 3 January 2009, an IOF warplane fired a missile at the American School to the west of Beit Lahia town. The school was destroyed and one of its guards, 25-year-old Salem Hamad Abu Qulaiq, was killed.
· At approximately 04:10 also on Saturday, IOF warplanes bombarded a 2-storey house belonging to Rezeq Abu Ghubait in Tal al-Za'tar neighborhood in the north of Jabalya. The house, which had been already evacuated, was destroyed and a number of neighboring house were heavily damaged. No casualties were reported.
Gaza City
· At approximately 09:10 on Friday, 2 January 2008, an IOF warplane fired a missile at a bird farm belonging to Zaki Mahmoud Ja'rour in al-Yarmouk area in the center of Gaza City. As a result, 16-year-old Christine Wadee' al-Turk, whose house is near the bird farm, died from a heart attack.
· At approximately 13:20 also on Friday, IOF tanks positioned to the east of al-Shoja'eya neighborhood in the east of Gaza City, fired a number of shells at Palestinian houses in the neighborhood. As a result, 10-year-old Hamada Ibrahim Musabbeh was seriously wounded when he was near his house. His feet were amputated. An hour later, he was pronounced dead. (.......)

Statement: http://www.grassrootsonline.org/news/press-releases/grassroots-international-condemns-bombing-gaza : Grassroots International Condemns the Bombing in Gaza - December 30th, 2008 *Donate to Grassroots International's emergency relief campaign for Gaza.
Grassroots International joins our partners in Palestine and Israel and thousands of peaceful activists worldwide to call for an immediate ceasefire and an end to the siege of Gaza, especially the violent attacks on Palestinian civilians including women and children, and the resumption of negotiations for a lasting and just peace in the region. We call for an immediate end to all attacks on civilians on both sides.
Grassroots International condemns the disproportionate violence heaped upon the people of Gaza by the Israeli military. Grassroots International also condemns the rocket attacks by Hamas upon the people of Israel. Let it be clear, however, that the actions taken by the Israeli government far outweigh - both in size and in devastation - the damage caused by a faction of Hamas. Since 2004, rockets fired from Gaza into Israel have caused less than 20 civilian deaths - those attacks are to be condemned and those lives mourned. However, in that same time period, Israeli military response has caused the deaths of thousands of Palestinian civilians - with even more deaths at the hands of a severe economic and geographic siege.
In every way possible, the current (and past) Israeli government has denied the Palestinian people the right to land, water, food and freedom. The current bombardment of Gaza underscores a preference for collective punishment instead of creative engagement, and only serves to expand the cycle of violence in the region. Calling on the international community to put more pressure on Israel to end its attacks on Gaza, Richard Falk , U.N. Special Rapporteur for the Palestinian Territories (who was denied entry by Israel) said to the BBC, "Israel is committing a shocking series of atrocities by using modern weaponry against a defenseless population - attacking a population that has been enduring a severe blockade for many months."
Every country has the right to defend itself, and this includes Israel. However, that right does not justify indiscriminate and brutal attacks on civilians, causing vast human suffering.
Increased violence will not bring security. It has not done so in the preceding decades and it will not now. The only way to peace is peace with justice. Grassroots International joins with others to call upon the Israeli and Palestinian leaders to discontinue all military and violent actions and sit down to seriously discuss peace with justice.
For more than 25 years, Grassroots International has worked with community-based organizations in the Middle East and throughout the world which strive for human rights, and the political struggle necessary to achieve those rights.

Attacking civilians is a war crime
ISM Date : 01-03-2009
A week after 'Operation Cast Lead' began, attacks on the Gaza Strip are continuing. The Israeli military this evening carried out the second multiple air strike on the Rafah border within a week. Shortly after 5.00 pm local time, F-16 fighter jets were heard in the skies over Rafah and then the bombardment began. Four people were killed in this offence which was a repeat of a similar attack carried out on Sunday 28th December.
On both occasions over 10 missiles were fired in quick succession, targeting tunnels which have allowed a certain amount of food and other basic necessities into the besieged Gaza Strip. Residential neighbourhoods lie directly adjacent to the border with Egypt and have been the scene of mass home demolitions in the past. During the past week there have been a number of air strikes on the refugee camps in the border area, destroying several homes.
ISM Gaza Strip volunteers filmed both attacks as they happened:

02-01-2009 Israel’s righteous fury and its victims in Gaza by Ilan Pappe, [1] The Electronic Intifada, 2 January 2009 (http://ilanpappe.com/?p=82, http://electronicintifada.net/v2/article10100.shtml):
"It is based first and foremost on sheer lies transmitted with a newspeak reminiscent of darker days in 1930s Europe. Every half an hour a news bulletin on the radio and television describes the victims of Gaza as terrorists and Israel’s massive killings of them as an act of self-defense. Israel presents itself to its own people as the righteous victim that defends itself against a great evil. The academic world is recruited to explain how demonic and monstrous is the Palestinian struggle, if it is led by Hamas. These are the same scholars who demonized the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in an earlier era and delegitimized his Fatah movement during the second Palestinian intifada."
"It seems that even the most horrendous crimes, such as the genocide in Gaza, are treated as discrete events, unconnected to anything that happened in the past and not associated with any ideology or system."
"Some of us, namely those committed to justice and peace in Palestine, unwittingly evade this debate by focusing, and this is understandable, on the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT) — the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Struggling against the criminal policies there is an urgent mission. But this should not convey the message that the powers that be in the West adopted gladly by a cue from Israel, that Palestine is only in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, and that the Palestinians are only the people living in those territories. We should expand the representation of Palestine geographically and demographically by telling the historical narrative of the events in 1948 and ever since and demand equal human and civil rights to all the people who live, or used to live, in what today is Israel and the OPT.
By connecting the Zionist ideology and the policies of the past with the present atrocities, we will be able to provide a clear and logical explanation for the campaign of boycott, divestment and sanctions."

Living on Borrowed Time in a Stolen Land By Gilad Atzmon Communicating with Israelis may leave one bewildered. The Rotten State of Egypt is too Powerless and Corrupt to Act By Robert Fisk Sayed Hassan Nasrallah, the Hizbollah secretary general in Lebanon, felt able to call on Egyptians to "rise in their millions" to open the border with Gaza, but they will not do so. Robert Fisk: Why bombing Ashkelon is the most tragic irony: How easy it is to snap off the history of the Palestinians, to delete the narrative of their tragedy, to avoid a grotesque irony about Gaza which - in any other conflict - journalists would be writing about in their first reports: that the original, legal owners of the Israeli land on which Hamas rockets are detonating live in Gaza. http://tinyurl.com/9rvatm

www.ukwatch.net/article/children_in_the_crosshairs:
"We asked John Pilger for his response to the new study from the Palestinian human rights group and the report’s effective burial by the corporate media. He told us:
“That this shocking report has been virtually ignored across the mainstream media, with the exception of the Guardian, is a striking example of the media’s two classes of humanity in Palestine. There is first class humanity, worthy of meticulous, often emotive coverage; these are the Israelis, including those guilty of great crimes, such as Ariel Sharon. And there is second class humanity, unworthy of even acknowledgement of their brutalising let alone the epic injustice done to them; these are the Palestinians. No, ‘second class’ is too high. They are third and fourth class victims, for not even the suffering and murder of their children is considered human enough to warrant reporting.” (Email, October 27, 2008)
We are reminded of British historian Mark Curtis’s term, “Unpeople”, to describe those on the receiving end of the West’s policies, actions and massive firepower. For those unfortunate individuals in the crosshairs of Western violence, their human aspirations, hopes, dreams, loves and lives are simply of no value"

"The death of one Israeli victim justifies the killing of a hundred Palestinians. One Israeli life is worth a hundred Palestinian lives.
This is what the Israeli State and the world media more or less -- with marginal questioning -- mindlessly repeat. And this claim, which has accompanied and justified the longest Occupation of foreign territories in 20th C. European history, is viscerally racist. That the Jewish people should accept this, that the world should concur, that the Palestinians should submit to it -- is one of history's ironic jokes. There's no laughter anywhere. We can, however, refute it, more and more vocally.
Let's do so."- John Berger 27 December 2008 - John Berger is an English art critic, painter, and novelist. Good website on Gaza
(GazaSiege.org: "Talking Points #63. The Gaza Crisis: December 2008, Phyllis Bennis, Institute for Policy Studies...") 01.03.2009: -
We should all join the global movement of outrage and solidarity with Gaza. There are a host of on-line petitions already – we should sign them all. The U.S. Campaign to End Israeli Occupation is compiling action calls on our website – www.endtheoccupation.org. We have to do all of that.
But then we can’t stop with emergency mobilizations. We still have to build our movement for BDS – boycott, divestment and sanctions, to build a global campaign of non-violent economic pressure to force Israel to comply with international law. We have to challenge U.S. military aid that scaffolds Israel’s military aggression, and U.S. political and diplomatic support that prevents the UN and the international community from holding Israel accountable for its violations. We have to do serious education and advocacy work, learning from other movements that have come before about being brave enough to call something what it is: Israeli policies are apartheid policies, and must be challenged on that basis. We have a lot of work to do.
-
Some of our highlights include:
* Holding an international arts competition, entitled “Expressions of Nakba”, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Palestinian dispossession.
* Organizing our first-ever national speaking tour, entitled “Separate Is Never Equal: Stories of Apartheid from South Africa and Palestine”, with featured speakers Diana Buttu and Eddie Makue.
* Coordinating a national advocacy campaign to oppose U.S. arms transfers to Israel.
* And launching a national consumer boycott of Motorola cell phones in response to the corporation’s profiteering from Israeli human rights abuses.

Reason for (a little) hope?
(Gush Shalom: "MASSIVE DEMONSTRATION AGAINST THE WAR [in Israel]") NEW! 01.04.2009:
01.03.2009 | Gush ShalomAt the same time as Ehud Barak was ordering the army to start the bloody ground offensive against Gaza, some ten thousand protesters from all over Israel marched in Tel-Aviv in a massive demonstration against the war.
“One does not build an election campaign over the dead bodies of children!” shouted the protesters in Hebrew rhymes. “Orphans and widows are not election propaganda!”, “Olmert, Livni and Barak – war is no game!”’ “All cabinet ministers are war criminals!!” Barak, Barak, don’t worry – we shall meet you in The Hague!”, “Enough, enough – speak with Hamas!”
The written posters were similar. Some of them paraphrased Barak’s election slogans: “Barak is not friendly, he is a murderer!” )The original Barak slogan says: “Barak is not friendly, he is a leader!”) Also: “No to the Election War, 2009!” and “The six-Knesset-seat war!” – an allusion to the polls which showed that in the first days of the war Barak’s Labor Party has gained six prospective seats.
The demonstration took place after a fight with the police, which tried to prevent or at least limit it, arguing that they would not be able to stop right-wing rioters from attacking it. Among other things, the police demanded that the organizers undertake to prevent the hoisting of Palestinian flags. The organizers petitioned the High Court of Justice, which decided that the Palestinian flag is legal and ordered the police to protect the demonstration from rioters,
The demonstration was decided upon by Gush Shalom and 20 other peace organizations, including the Women’s Coalition for Peace, Anarchists Against the Wall, Hadash, the Alternative Information Center and New Profile. Meretz and Peace Now did not participate officially, but many of their members showed up. Some thousand Arab citizens from the north arrived in 20 buses straight from the big demonstration of the Arab public which had taken place in Sakhnin.
The organizers themselves were surprised by the large number of protesters. “A week after the start of Lebanon War II, we succeeded in mobilizing only 1000 demonstrators against it. The fact that today there came 10,000 proves that the opposition to the war is much stronger this time. If Barak goes on with his plans, public opinion may completely turn against the war in a few days.”
The giant Gush Shalom banner said in Hebrew, Arabic and English: “Stop Killing! Stop the Siege! Stop the occupation!” The slogan of the demonstration called for the end of the blockade and an immediate cease-fire. (...)

UNGA President calls for sanctions against Israeli apartheid
Worldwide Activism, Palestinian Grassroots Anti-Apartheid Wall Campaign, November 25th, 2008The following speeches were given on November 24 by Miguel d’Escoto Brockmann, President of the United Nations General Assembly. Mr. Brockmann should be applauded for this speech, as he uses powerful content – including references to apartheid, American-imposed obstacles to peace, Israeli intimidation and last but not least, the BDS movement – that has not been heard yet at this level of UN diplomacy.
The fact that this statement was made by such a high level official at the General Assembly is an important step forward for Palestine. At the same time, however, it points to the serious flaw of the UN system, that the real power lies not in the decisions of the General Assembly, but in the hands of a few world powers in the Security Council. Thus, while Mr. Brockmann’s speech should certainly be seen as a sign of progress for Palestinian solidarity, the achievement of substantive success will only come when the UN system is reformed, and the executive body of the institution is truly representative of global sentiment
