Happy Holocaust, Gaza
Soumis par Bert De Belder le jeu, 01/01/2009 - 23:19.
In my mailbox on this New Year's Day, one particular message drew my attention. Not to be mistaken as yet another new year's wish, its subject line said "Happy Holocaust, Gaza". It was the next press statement by Dr. Yousef Mousa of the Union of Health Work Committees in Gaza, warning that the history of the holocaust may repeat itself in Gaza. That is, if the international community doesn't move decisively to stop the Israeli terror against the Palestinian population.
Dr. Mousa's letter is not yet on the UHWC website, so I copy it here in full:
Happy Holocaust Gaza
Is History Repeating Itself ???
"The Holocaust was the systemic, bureaucratic, state-sponsored persecution and murder of millions Jews by Nazi regime and its collaborators. "Holocaust" is a word of Greek origin meaning "sacrifice by fire." The Nazis, who came to power in Germany in January 1933, believed that Germans were "racially superior" and
that the Jews, deemed "inferior," were an alien threat to the so-called German racial community. During the era of the Holocaust, German authorities also targeted other groups because of their perceived "racial inferiority", including the disabled, and some of the Slavic peoples. Other groups were persecuted on political, ideological, and behavioral grounds, among them Communists and Socialists.
Today, the Israeli Occupying forces (IOF) are practicing the same offensive barbaric acts as the Nazis did before 76 years. By the end of the 6th day of its military operation, the IOF have killed 414 people and injured 2089 civilians as part of the final solution to end the Palestinian resistance against the occupation. The victims of the Israeli terror include children and women, through the targeting of homes, mosques, educational institutions, civil society organizations and police stations. The air strikes have not only destroyed every police and security office of Gaza’s elected government, but have killed and injured hundreds of civilians; at least one strike reportedly hit groups of students attempting to find transportation home from the university.
Many of these individuals died as a result of the earlier Israeli actions, specifically the complete sealing off of entry and exit to and from the Gaza Strip, which has led to severe shortages of medicine and fuel (as well as food), resulting in the inability of ambulances to respond to the injured, the inability of hospitals to adequately provide medicine or necessary equipment for the injured, and the inability of Gaza’s besieged doctors and other medical workers to sufficiently treat the victims.
The Israeli air strikes today on civilian homes in Jabalia refugee camp killed 21 persons among them 11 children and 9 women, the catastrophic human toll that they have caused, represent severe and massive violations of international humanitarian law as defined in the Geneva Conventions, both in regard to the obligations of an Occupying Power and in the requirements of the laws of war.
The entire world is witnessing these scandalous and outrageous acts, and yet no concrete step has been taken!!! It is a real shame....on the countries that are providing the military equipment including warplanes and missiles used in these illegal attacks, as well as those countries who have supported and participated in the siege of Gaza that itself has caused a humanitarian catastrophe. Those countries have been and remain complicit, either directly or indirectly, in Israel’s violations of international law.
UHWC appeals to all Member States of the United Nations that the UN continues to be bound to an independent obligation to protect the Palestinian civilian population facing massive violations of international humanitarian law. I call on all Member States, as well as officials and every relevant organ of the United Nations system, to move on an emergency basis not only to condemn Israel’s serious violations, because they are morally reprehensible, but to develop new approaches to providing real protection for the Palestinian people.
Unless the international community puts pressure on Israel to stop the mass killing of civilians and the willful destruction of property and infrastructure, the people of Gaza will again be forced to suffer the humiliating and crippling dictates of Israel's military rule OR history could be repeated again."
